We Want Clean Power Companies
This is the group where anyone working to "green their local power companies" can meet and share progress. Power companies can buy the power they sell you from coal, or from renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. Yet less than 5% of total electricity sales in the U.S. is from renewable energy. If enough customers demand that their energy come from these climate-friendly sources, your power company will listen. Join this group to share successes, ideas, questions and discussion on this goal!

The United States as we know it, survives on debt that is printed on paper when the world needs all its' trees. The reason for this post is because we can eradicate this debt and revive the nation that powers the world, and it can be done quite easily. I'll start by simply putting some facts out. All people need water, but all life needs oxygen even more. Pollution and deforestation has degraded our cityscapes and left us with hazardous air to breath,so this is a MANDITORY problem needed to be addressed which too means there are many jobs, millions even just in planting trees. For instance, a full grown oak tree can displace 50,000 gallons of water during a flash flood, the old growth of New Orleans could've saved so much! Also, it is not just trees but large terrestrial masses must be implimented into barren lands to carbon fixate and reinvent severe domino effects. The media says we need better cars and we do, but we also need more trees to take in the carbon. BOTH!!! We can call this one of many steps necessary. Next, immense trash displacement! Again with simple facts, what you bury in the ground finds its way back to the groundwater thus toxifying our freshwater reserves not to mention infultrating soil integrity in which our fish and cucumbers end up toxic from bioaccumulation. What to do!? Simple. Like I mentioned earlier, our debt is outrageous but many countries are in desperate need of revitalization and so they take on some debt for us to come and recycle the waste and recreate an ecosystem which in turn gives them a new chance at economical growth. SHAZAM!!!! That accounts for millions of jobs too!!!! What to do with the waste though? Our recycling capabilities are in an infant state but soon they will be adult, trust me. This is my idea and all of this I didn't sleep for months thinking about and this is the way we catalyze the change we need overnight,........we create a global treaty that embraces recycled imports and exports by a specific date and then we begin creating stations all over the globe where garbage becomes not waste but a commodity, a resource that can be reclaimed, seperated by the common man, and the net weight of ANY material can be calculated and much like a deposit, our garbage turns to money, AND INSTANTLY a huge problem is transformed into a brand new industry.  This means the plastic, batteries, aluminum, cell phones, etc., but lets not forget the biomass.  This refers to all the fruit and veggies that get tossed.  If we collect that garbage elsewhere we can begin composting to aid the dying farmlands, and sell more of our refined waste to areas in need; meanwhile, all the methane produced in the breakdown of the biological matter goes on to provide heat and combustible renewable energy to run these factories.  Also, if we could merge our agriculture with our biomass no longer would the methane from the animals escape but it too could be trapped in like one of those indoor golf arenas nearby?  Remember, agriculture accounts for most of our pollution and so it too should be refined in our efforts to recreate this failing world, but we now know one must fail in order to understand how to succeed.  When reading this keep in mind the startup will be immense but ultimately once built these new industries will cost 0$ every day after (-upkeep of course).  At this point in the game investors are scared because we keep reinventing new technology and they have the right to be scared because there still is much change to come.  Especially when the manufactures realize that many of these renewable energy sources shouldn't be competing but instead merging.  Solar-wind, geothermal-solar-wave turbines, and so on.  We all need to step back now, since we finally can, and take a moment to imagine the world we want to create.  It's exciting!!!!  I'm dedicating my life to this fix and that is because I refuse to bring new life into a failing world, so help me help you help us all.

Sincerely,

Ian Allen Orawiec,

Currently jobs are being lost, spending is down, foreclosures are up and everyone is going crazy. The worst part about this is that each step is catalyzed by the step before it. For instance, a family wants to save money but hours are cut at work. With less money coming in and the intentions to save that stimulus check, this family is not contributing the expected amount back into stimulating the economy and not only that, but they've altered their lifestyle, diet, and traveling costs to try and stretch their money out as they prepare for unemployment. This is most of the middle-class families in America were talking about. Outside of the basics being cut you can bet that trend setting is at a high time low, especially since the earlier goodwill trend became hip. More markets with low turnover and forced into bankruptcy. Ultimately making the company the first family works for cut hours and staff. This is a downward spiral effect and it will not stop until it completes its cycle.... UNLESS! Unless we interject in this cycle with a NEW variable that can feasibly stand chance in redirecting it back the way it began to descend. This is not easy because every false interjection actually speeds up the decline. Let's think here, what could provide jobs, security, and economic stimulation? HMMMMM....this is funny,......SUSTAINABILITY! Seriously if we embraced it with the idea of a global movement, we could get so many people and even other countries right behind us, with us and FINALLY moving forward with global efforts to sustain life on earth. I have ALL the details down and the steps ready to enact, I just need the word to sound. Global reform by reinventing global morale. Remember, it is all for the kids for they are the future. You will all being hearing from me soon. This is exciting stuff, but time is short and we must be swift to reverberate through the many corners of the world.   Read More »
As atmospheric CO2 concentration increases, its solubility into the earth's oceans also increases. The increase of CO2 concentration in the surface sea water is making the oceans more acidic, by reacting with the water to form carbonic acid. Also, the abundance of protons in the water is decreasing the carbonate saturation of the water. Many creatures, including coral reefs and, well anything that lives in a shell, uses the carbonate ions in the water to precipitate calcium carbonate which makes up their skeletal structures. Ocean acidification is a major problem with devastating effects that are happening right now. The major differences between this problem and global warming are, first, the acidifying effects of atmospheric CO2 rely on BASIC chemistry to produce the hypothesis, not models or projections; second, the changes may happen so suddenly that adaptive tendencies of a species may not have time to cope with a changing environment. This means that when the ocean pH reaches the calcification threshold, these species would be lost, forever. I have been surprised at how little attention this problem has been given. I found one group working towards a solution. An open source project called Cquestrate has an idea that would, potentially, reduce atmospheric CO2, actually turning back the clock on climate change, while, at the same time, mitigating ocean acidification. This slide show explains the process http://www.cquestrate.com/the-idea/slideshow-presentation
It seems to me that without communication from all disciplines of science with industry and policy making, solving climate change will never happen, and, disturbingly, we may make a mistake that would make matters worse.

Last week, President-Elect Barack Obama’s said that his economic stimulus plan will create half a million new green jobs for America.

“We’ll create nearly half a million jobs by investing in clean energy – by committing to double the production of alternative energy in the next three years, and by modernizing more than 75% of federal buildings and improving the energy efficiency of two million American homes,” the president elect said. These made-in-America jobs building solar panels and wind turbines, developing fuel-efficient cars and new energy technologies pay well, and they can’t be outsourced.”

do it or die!!!

Our local BPW wants to build a new "Carbon capture" facility here in western Michigan and is touting it as a state-of-the-art solution to the problem of Carbon emissions disposal. More like state-of-the-ark! Looks to me like another "sweep it under the carpet" solution. The gases, instead of being blown up into the atmosphere, will be blown "down" several hundred feet deep into the earth's crust.

I will have more later on the exact name and specs of the process, but wanted to get the discussion rolling. Is this nuts, or am I being paranoid? Any thoughts?

Is anyone else as freaked out as I am by all these corporate "green" commercials? It's an understatement to say that I am skeptical not only of corporate motives (which, of course, are driven entirely by profit) but, more importantly, of their ability to deliver on their promises without massive unanticipated costs. Every day, I get more frightened that this movement of ours is being corrupted by corporate agents who only see an opportunity to make a quick buck rather than an opportunity to rescue the planet from sure environmental devastation.

We have already seen some of this corruption in upstate New York with the wind farms in the northern part of the state. Wind companies are apparently colluding with local officials to gobble up land, and in the process they are dividing communities and exploiting vulnerable populations.

It's time for us to take some responsibility for the forces we have played a role in unleashing. If we don't our whole movement may be tainted and the opportunity for meaningful change lost.
I joined the We Campaign hoping that I could meet people actively working towards our goal. I have come to realize that some of us have joined this campaign to 'add' as many 'friends' possible to his or her profile. A Green Facebook/Myspace..

I ask of anyone who reads this post to tell me what he/she is doing to spread awareness of the We Campaign. What actions are being taken to let elected officials know how "WE" feel about our nation's future energy needs/sources. Let us take action, not compete for profile popularity.
DOE is funding the development of equipment that will allow solar power systems, such as this system atop San Francisco's Moscone Center, to interact more effectively with the power grid.
Credit: SunPower Corporation

DOE announced on August 12 that it plans to invest up to $24 million over a number of years to develop products that connect solar power systems with the electrical grid in an interactive way. DOE has selected 12 industry teams that will receive $2.9 million in current fiscal year funding to develop conceptual designs and market analyses for such Solar Energy Grid Integration Systems (SEGIS) projects. The projects will focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and will involve such efforts as developing systems that can communicate with an interactive utility grid and advanced power meters to respond to power price changes over the course of a day, systems that can work with energy storage devices and "smart" appliances to respond to utility price signals, and systems that can interact with building energy management systems.

The goal is to maximize the value of PV systems and offer consumers greater control over their electric consumption and costs. In the future, and subject to congressional appropriations, additional funding will be provided for the projects that achieve the most promising technological advancements while demonstrating a high likelihood of commercial success. The SEGIS projects are integral to President Bush's Solar America Initiative (SAI), which aims to make solar energy cost-competitive with conventional forms of electricity by 2015. See the DOE press release and the SEGIS information on the SAI Web page of DOE's Sandia National Laboratories.

I took some time looking at my own energy use - not comprehensive, but specifically my electricity usage. I believe cleanly generated electricity will be the energy currency of the future, which is why I'm so determined to buy an electric car. The Tesla is a dream:

but the Tango is a very real possibility:

So...aside from putting photovoltaic panels on the roof - another goal, I wanted to know how the electricity that came in from the grid was generated.   Read More »
Hey everybody. I would first of all like to deliver a sincere apology to all of my friends here at We and to all those who have joined the Demands for the Candidates group. I have been inactive the past week-and-a-half due to a severe accident involving my father-in-law. He has been in an intensive care unit at a major hospital in my area, and for a time we were not sure if he would make it. I am sure everyone will understand, but I still feel a sense of regret that I have not been working as I had wanted to originally with the group.

Anyways. Me being in a hospital waiting room for so many hours this past week has allowed me a lot of time to think about the We Campaign and the group, Demands for the Candidates, I have founded here. I would like to share some of these thoughts and opinions which I have had time to formulate. They go something like this...

While I have not had any time to post or write, I have had snippets of time where I was able to check my email. It would be and understatement to say the Demands for the Candidates group has had a significant response. Some of this response has been negative however. I have, so far, 83 emails from people telling me that while they (mostly) support what Demands for the Candidates objective is, their is no way they could join such a group because even though they support Al Gore's plan, they will vote this November for their favorite presidential candidate regardless of whether that candidate has adopted and endorsed Al Gore's plan.

This has been a real eye-opener to me. It made me think a whole lot about the purpose of the group, where it is headed, and how effective it can be in making change. I have come to two conclusions.

Conclusion 1:
The group, Demands for the Candidates, will ultimately be unsuccessful in its mission to affect the presidential candidates environmental policies.

Through a combination of Barack Obama not wanting to endanger losing votes in the 'Center' due to seeming extreme, and John McCain receiving large donations from companies that would be financially damaged by Al Gore's plan, we can safely assume that neither candidate would be willing to move very far at all away from their current environmental policies.

Along with this is the fact that, as I have already mentioned, people will (for the most part) vote for their favorite candidate regardless of whether that candidate supports Al Gore's plan. And the candidates know this.

Conclusion 2:
The continuation of Demands for the Candidates in its current form will be a futile effort.

The Demands for the Candidates group must either be reformed or deleted. After all, isn't the purpose of the We Campaign as a whole to put pressure on not only the presidential candidates, but to ALL public officials? So isn't it redundant to create an organization within another organization that has the same purpose as the first organization?

All that being said, I would love to here from anyone who has any thoughts on what can be done at this point. I will be looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

Thank you,

Michael
So I just created a group for Tulsans who are interested in signing on to VP Gore's challenge. I've already sent an e-mail off to AEP asking what their plans are for providing power from clean, renewable sources. The more letters they get, the more notice they will take.

So what's stopping you?

Tell others what your thoughts are, feel free to ask questions. Almost as important, get the word out! Put a link up on our blog, facebook, or myspace page. Tell your friends and co-workers. This can be achieved if we all work together.

Hey We! First post to We; big step.

I began exploring how one goes about purchasing their electricity from carbon-emission free sources. I was excited to see that Pacific Gas & Electric, the company that supplies power to most of Northern California, offers something called a ClimateSmart program, which claims to allow customers to be "climate neutral." They have a pretty graph even.

I'm not excited anymore. Not only can customers not purchase their electricity from entirely carbon free sources here, the offset program, which is what ClimateSmart attempts to be, is pretty lousy apparently...
