Advice for Environmental Living
This group is meant as a place to post simple suggestions that one can easily adopt, reducing their effect on the environment. I hope others will post their suggestions, too. And I hope you will offer feedback on the best way to post the tips--the blog or the listserv or both.

Here's an article on green options to mow your grass, Greening the Lawn...Even Mow.

On a personal note, sorry I've been for a while. I recently moved from New Orleans, though in the last few weeks I made an ill-timed visit that gave me yet another hurricane evacuation. Global warming is real.   Read More »
"I booked online tickets for the movie. I got the confirmation on SMS. Guess what, I have taken the print out of it as well."

"I just managed to take a print out of all the e-learning modules"

"There is a cousin of mine who needs all the questions that are asked in Fresher tests. I browsed all through the day and finally have a huge set of print outs that will help him"

"I have so many print outs of the presentation that are of no use as I forgot to change the dark background of the slides. Now all I have is a huge bundle of black paper"

Does any of these statements sound familiar?

Lets start getting more sensitive towards our environment and resolve to be more judicious in using them.
Lets do a new beginning today and start by avoiding printing anything unless absolutely necessary.

Save paper Save trees.
Cars were once a luxury …but now they are a necessity. Few years back when Global Warming issue was brought up in a big way…voices were raised to stop the growing number of cars on the roads. Though the throats have all dried up …there isn't any reduction in the number of four wheelers moving on the roads. If we cant curb the number of cars then the least we can do is use them intelligently.

My sincere appeal to everyone across the globe is to utilize your machines with some care towards the nature.

• Don't keep your vehicles on idling. Just to save on the started we waste a lot of precious gas and pollute the old Earth more.

• Places like traffic signals, dropping kids to school and waiting till they are safe inside, saying bye to a friend after a meeting are some instances where the time involved may be a minute or so but the damage is much greater.

• Do keep your vehicle's tires inflated to the recommend pressure.

• Avoid using a four wheeler if you are the only one traveling. Its not advisable to use a car for just one person. Friends staying nearby going to the same destination everyday can pool in and use one vehicle to commute. Take turns to use your cars.

• If you have good public transports available in your countries please make use of them.

Just by becoming a member of WE and joining communities, wearing T-shirts and using stickers, you and me can't make any difference. We need to work, step by step (never mind if they are small) but keep taking them. Never stop.

There is a very famous saying here, 'Keep working don't worry for the fruit'. If the work is done with a good intention, its fruits will always be sweet!

I have just signed up for cessation of physical phonebook delivery. It's a quick thing that can quickly snowball into a big impact if you take the couple minutes to just fill in your name & address, then forward it on to others.

This is the only world we've got -- let's take at least the simple steps to help keep it alive & kickin'!
This is not to say that you stink, but grist.org has an article on environmental choices in deodorant here: http://www.grist.org/advice/productas/2008/08/12/.   Read More »
hi everyone! i recently heard that pumping up your tires can help you use gas more efficiently. So pump it up!
Here's a good article from grist.org available http://www.grist.org/advice/how/2008/08/05/.

Lately, the world news has been filled with stories of hungry people struggling to feed themselves as food prices rise dramatically. Even in the U.S. and other wealthy countries, where the situation is not as dire, people have been altering their eating and spending habits to adjust to the higher bills.   Read More »
When eating out, you often need paper napkins, and if you're like me, you don't want to run out once you sit down. That means, once you're done, you might have some un-used napkins. Don't throw them away. Put them in your purse, pocket, glove compartment, etc. It's always handy to have them around and put them to good use.
Never leave your car idle. Leaving your car idle for than 30 sec is the same as starting your car.

I took some time looking at my own energy use - not comprehensive, but specifically my electricity usage. I believe cleanly generated electricity will be the energy currency of the future, which is why I'm so determined to buy an electric car. The Tesla is a dream:

but the Tango is a very real possibility:

So...aside from putting photovoltaic panels on the roof - another goal, I wanted to know how the electricity that came in from the grid was generated.   Read More »
Lately, we've gotten a couple of messages via the listserv, marketing products that claim to be green. Please do not use the membership of this group as a means to market products.

The purpose of this group is to share advice on living in an environmentally friendly way. It is not to sell things; most posts involve buying less, not more. And if one product is recommended over another, it is out of concern for the Earth, not self interest.
Try to drive your car under 45 mph and have the right amount of air presser in your tires these will help make your gallon of gas go longer and save the Earth at the same time.
It's good to be back. For the past week, I've been slammed by a project that made me loathe the thought of spending more time at the keyboard. But that's behind me now. Thanks to Krithika for his posts.

Here's a good article I read on the Huffington Post, which is available at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maura-judkis/4-easy-ways-to-be-a-freeg_b_115439.html.   Read More »
Water is one of the basic necessities to survive. We ought to save water and not waste it.

Nature provides us with lots of water in the form of rain and snow. Here in India, there is a movement known as 'RAIN HARVESTING'. People built tanks in the backyard of their houses, and when it rains the water gets collected in these tanks. This way we store and save a lot of water. I had stayed in Kashmir for sometime. And there we used to collect snow. This water is later used as per requirement.

We also have a festival called 'VANMAHOTSAV' in the month of July. It means 'Forest Festival'. People plant as many saplings as possible on this day and spread awareness for the requirement of forests.

Both Rain harvesting and Vanmahotsav have been in practise for about 3 decades in our country.

We have to always remember one thing. Adjust to the ways of nature, never ever try to make nature adjust to your ways. IT WONT WORK THAT WAY.

Live life in a healthy and safe way.
Dear friends

We all need boiling water for some thing or the other. Please do keep in mind that once a boil comes up in the vessal do not try to boil it further. We all know boiling temperature of water is 100 degrees C. Keeping it still over the heat wont make it hotter!!! You have already made it reach is maximum temperature.

Also make sure u use a lid over the vessal....this makes the water boil faster. This point was already brought up by one of our members i remember.. to add to that....pour a little water over the lid. The vapours that rise inside the vessal get condensed ...forms droplets under the lid and fall back into the vessal ( remember the water over the lid is comparatively cooler). You will get the water heated or boiled even faster .... it really works. Try it.
Urinals (such a lovely word) use less water than regular toilets. So, guys, use one if that's all you need.
