Repower America Repower Utah
Last updated: July 16, 2009

Did you know?

  • Utah's potential geothermal resources can power over 1.3 million homes.  The state's potential unconventional geothermal resources could power another 38 million homes.
  • Utah’s solar thermal power potential is equal to 60 times the state’s current electricity capacity.
  • First Wind is planning a 1 GW wind farm in Milford, UT.  The first 203 MW phase of the project is already under construction and will generate enough electricity to power over 55,000 homes.

Clean energy jobs in Utah

Currently, 94% of Utah’s electricity generation comes from dirty coal despite the state’s potential to become a national leader in both solar and geothermal energy production. If the state increased investments in these clean energy resources, it could gain significant economic benefits. In fact, Salt Lake City employed over 3,000 people in the cleantech industry during 2006. And a recent report estimates that continued growth in the clean energy industry could create over 34,000 “green” jobs in the next three decades!

Featured story

Kevin R. of Logan works as an applications engineer for Campbell Scientific, a Logan-based manufacturer of data-collecting equipment used in evaluating the potential of future wind sites and measuring the performance of existing sites. Kevin’s job involves selecting the correct datalogging device for each situation, installing it, and teaching consultants and integrators how to read and operate the equipment. Since joining Campbell Scientific in 1996, Kevin has observed a marked increase in interest in wind datalogging equipment corresponding to the heightened national interest in wind energy. He is happy to have found a job that puts his technical abilities to work toward a good cause. “I have fun doing technical work and at the same time have a personal sense of accomplishment that I am furthering the cause of science,” Kevin said.
